M. Guasco, The Debate on the Second Vatican Council: Historiographic and Theological Perspectives

The Author, a historian of the Church and of political thought as well as a catholic priest, outlines a general view of the most significant problematic pivots of the Second Vatican Council, highlighting how some difficulties which came out in the development of the paths traced by the Council should not hinder us from grasping the powerful innovative stimuli arisen from the assize. This contribution was presented by Prof. Guasco at the Convention «Catholicism Today. Ecumenical Perspectives», organized in Rome by the Melanchthon Ecumenical Centre in November 2010.

I. Benedetti, Missione cristiana e cultura postmoderna

I. Benedetti, Christian Mission and Post-modern Culture

In the last few years, much has been said about a crisis of Christianity. The- re are considerable and worrying signs of an estrangement from churches, but at the same time clear signals appear of new, creative ways of being a church. What seems to be undergoing a crisis is the paradigm with which the churches in the West have identified themselves with the prevailing culture, whereas a new vitality is to be found in the churches which are more connected with their background, more sensitive to the surrounding culture, more reactive towards the civil community and having a clear missionary vocation.

M.C. Laurenzi, Empirismo dall’alto

M.C. Laurenzi, Empiricism from Above

The article aims to describe the encounter of the reader with the biblical text, in which a particular experience appears as the bearer of a universal opening. At the end of the day this means understanding the dynamics of religious expression: does it refer to a self-asserting subject, or is it a response to the transcendence that it solicits?

E. Noffke, The Foreigner in the Bible

Texts from the Old and from the New Testament regarding the foreigner are examined here. Two models emerge: on the one hand the «excluding» model, according to which the foreigner is the enemy to be eliminated or avoided; on the other hand the «welcoming» model is to be found: the foreigner is like a brother and is declared as having rights. Both are present in the New Testament, where two new features can be found. The first is faith in Jesus the Messiah: because Jesus was recognized also by the heathens, according to the promises God’s people is now enlarged to include foreigners. The second element which is now underlined is that whoever becomes part of this renewed people, becomes a stranger to the world. A completely new concept of «foreign» springs from this.
