Nicola Mariani, Ordine pubblico e fede evangelica: convergenze
Nicola Mariani, Public Order and Protestant Faith: Convergences
This contribution studies the relationship between public order and Protestant faith through the category of Convergence. The main theological references are the pact (Bund) in Karl Barth and the dialectics between the “ultimate” and the “penultimate” in Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In a dialogue with these authors, the structures which order the life of the world (the “mandates”) are re-qualified as “penultimate realities” that meet, with reference to the “ultimate reality” of the Gospel the protection of their being creatures, that is to say autonomy, secularity and relativity. A declination of the “Theology of the Cross” is the critical criterion which prevents the return of any ideological absolutization, of religious or other kind, and promoting a “blissful secularization” which will preserve the finitude of the political dimension. The theological thesis is developed in a dialogue with the political liberalism of John Rawls. Christian faith offers a possible resource together with others to reach a “consensus for intersection” which can contribute to the stability of modern liberal democracy.
Nicola Tedoldi, John Wesley, Richard Rolle.
Nicola Tedoldi, John Wesley, Richard Rolle. In Search of a Possible Meeting Point
This essay studies the relationship between Richard Rolle and John Wesley, revealing a deep influence which goes beyond a simple textual dependency and appears like a “mediate reception”. In spite of Wesley’s explicit silence as regards his sources, the research shows how Hampole’s hermit offered the wording for a “religion of the heart”, influencing the sensorial and affective dimension of Methodism. Aldersgate’s experience is thus interpreted in continuity with English medieval mysticism, distinguishing Wesley’s thought both from Wycliffe’s radicalism and the continental quietism. Through the analysis of shared stylistic forms, like alliteration, a shared will to democratizing spirituality emerges. In conclusion, the silence of Wesley’s documents is not to be considered an absence, but the sign of a magisterial synthesis which could translate the medieval mystic ardour into a methodical and universal language of the revival of the eighteenth century.
Musica sacra ritrovata.
Maria Teresa Pizzulli, From Women’s Deaconship to the Musical Ministry of Contemporary Female Musicians
Female Deaconship and the contribution of lady musicians of church music represent two important expressions of the role of women in spiritual and social life. These two contexts, which are often overlooked, show how women have contributed to the formation of the religious experience, not only through service, but also through music. Many of the composers of church music, from the time of the Reformation onwards, had and still have a significant part in churches and in society. This Article is an extract of a research on female composers of church music which is collected in the book, Female Composers between Life, Art and Spirituality. Church Music Rediscovered.
Hiltrud Stahlberger-Vogel, “Earth, Soul and Society”: Impulses of Transactional Eco-analysis for Education
This critical study is dedicated to a recent publication by the transactional analyst Giles Barrow. Starting from an ample psychological, teaching intercultural and spiritual background, the Author describes how the central values of education, such as growth, autonomy and freedom, risk being distorted in the present western society because of its being oriented to the product and the outcome. This causes competition among students, teachers and teaching institutions and to a disconnection and alienation from oneself, from others and from the ecosystem, the Author adds to the values of growth, autonomy and freedom the values of enoughness, homonomy and natality. When a teacher and the students meet, it may happen that the parties involved experiment a subjectivation and that the students may be able to re-connect with themselves, the others and the ecosystem, so that they may be able to choose how to exist in the world, in response to a call to action and to an active life, which includes also a social and political commitment.
