Riccardo Maisano, Jerome as interpreter of Isaiah: from the Hebrew text to Giovanni Diodati’s version

Dealing with biblical textual criticism, the attitudes of Protestant exegesis on the one hand and of Catholic exegesis on the other are not always so far away as one might believe at a first sight. On the contrary, they are often open to mutual, albeit undeclared influence. The exchange between Reformed and Catholic translations and exegetical approaches to interpreting difficult biblical passages looks lively and fruitful. This helps to show us that Jerome’s example facing the sacred languages, followed by Diodati holding his dialogue with Hebrew, Greek, and Latin languages, did not remain an isolated example. It was indeed a pattern for an effective approach to the Scriptures.

Stefano Villani, William Chauncey Langdon and the activity of the Protestant Episcopal Church’s Committee on the Italian Reform Movement in the United States (1865-1874)

This article reconstructs the major role played by William Chauncey Langdon (1831-1895) in the activities towards Italy developed by the Episcopal Protestant Church in the second half of the nineteenth century. In Italy, between the autumn of 1859 and the spring of 1861, Langdon gave life to the Episcopal congregations of Rome and Florence. Back in America, on his impulse, in 1865 the Episcopal Church gave life to a Joint Committee on the Italian Reform Movement that sent him to Italy in early 1867. He remained there until the summer of 1873, providing information on the Italian religious world in America and supporting Italian reform groups. Langdon presented Episcopalism to his Italian interlocutors as a model for a possible reformation of the Catholic church. In contact with Ricasoli, Langdon was the de facto director of the Esaminatore, after the death of Stanislao Bianciardi in 1868.

Fulvio Ferrario, With the Reformation, Beyond the Reformation. Theses on the Doctrine of Predestination

These theses constitute the draft of a lecture given in different places (protestant congregations, ecumenical meetings, workshops) on a topic that traditionally raises controversies. The perspective that has been chosen here follows Karl Barth and would like, on the one side, to endorse the Reformers’ intentions, on the other to overcome the most problematic apories that are stressed by this doctrine.

Lubomir Žak, An important contribution to the Italian Lutherforschung

This article offers a synthetic analysis of the book: Lutero. Un cristiano e la sua eredità 1517-2017 (Luther: a Christian and his Legacy 1517-2017), directed by A. Melloni, and stresses two aspects that characterize the critical historical Lutherforschung: its Italian specificity and the intention to catch the full weight of Luther as a Christian in the multifaceted historical function carried out by him. This essay focuses particularly on the idea of the project director to analyze the connection between the “Luther of history” and the “Luther of tradition”, showing that the Reformer has been and still is told and interpreted, historically and theologically, from quite different, often opposite, points of view.
