Werner Kahl, Fondamenti, metodi, esperienze

Werner Kahl, Bases, Methods, Experiences

In Germany, the arrival of Christians coming from every part of the world in the last few years has obliged the German Protestant Church (EKD) to take note not only of the dynamics which are being established between new and old Church members, but also of the necessity of changing dramatically the classic approach which western Churches have always had towards Churches from the southern part of the world. Once the paternalistic attitude has been abandoned, it is also necessary to overcome the intercultural aspect and to initiate a transcultural approach, which may help develop theologically the new elements emerging from the encounter of different cultures, theologies, spirituality, starting from biblical exegesis, which must open to the suggestions coming from the whole world, as local congregations have been slowly doing. The last part of the article reports the examples of a technique used for biblical studies in South Africa, and of an intercultural liturgy. It also presents the programme of the new syllabus of Ecumenical Specialization in Theology, offered by the Academy of Mission of the University of Hamburg.

Paolo Naso, Religious Pluralism and Society

In a country which is as religiously static as Italy, migratory processes have brought a new religious pluralism, which is relevant not only from the point of view of quantity. Many immigrants value their religious experience very highly and express it in peculiar forms; sometimes it involves claiming rights which are not contemplated by the laws in force, and are therefore socially and politically controversial. Having to face the “new religious pluralism” and the dangers of a multiculturalism which juxtaposes communities relegated to confessional ghettos, it is necessary to bring into operation procedures of dialogue and confrontation, in order to respond both to the necessity of social cohesion and of freedom of religious faith.

Ilaria Valenzi, The Difficulties of Religious Freedom in Italy

The defence of the rights of religious freedom is conditioned unfavourably by the historical situation of Italy, which has produced the present arrangement of legislation of this matter. The system of the sources of Italian Law is marked by a vulnus of discipline, because different instruments of legislation coexist, with the consequence of differentiated levels of recognition of rights. Although the introduction of a general law on religious freedom is urgently needed, the process which would lead to this law is subject to political instability. In the meantime, migrations have changed the religious tissue of the country, and new demands are drawn to the attention of Law. In a situation of legislative uncertainty, the opportunity must be seized to rethink the legal instruments from an interdisciplinary and intercultural viewpoint.

Philip Towner, Traduzione e riconciliazione

Philip Towner, Translation and Reconciliation

The article shows how the activity of translation and the human need for reconciliation are interconnected, and it introduces the concept of “untranslatable” applying it to the biblical term καταλλάσσω (katalassô), translated as “reconciliation”. From a logical point of view, the term “reconciliation” is untranslatable, as it may mean many different things in different contexts; it produces the need of a higher number of translations, and the instability which is characteristic of it suggests many types of reconciliation; it regards rebuilding relationships in a “relational nature which does not wipe out differences, but guarantees the right space to allow otherness, and derives force from diversity”. Through the observations of numerous authors and various metaphors, the Author pursues his re- search on translation as a hermeneutics of reconciliation.

George G. Ennin, The Mission Inverts Its Route

The title of the article can be interpreted in two ways: after centuries of mis- sions going from the Northern to the Southern hemisphere, which were combined with the attraction of colonization and commerce, today, thanks to the new immigration caused by economical and security needs, the movement is from the South, which is deeply religious, to a secularized North. However, the Author hopes for another level, starting from his African context: “a change of the missionary paradigm”, distinguishing between a European Christianity, unable to respond to the spiritual needs of African believers, from the Gospel and from a faith which must incarnate in a culture, in order to really exist.

Yann Redalié, Paul, an Intercultural Ecclesiology?

Starting from the identification of a shared baptismal tradition, which pro- claims the overcoming of discriminations founded on ethnical-religious, social and gender membership, the Author examines the different interpretations which the Apostle gives in his letters depending on the cultural context of his addressees. If the debate on identity reveals a judaizing background in Gal 3, 23-29, in 1Cor 12, 11-24 Paul, addressing an urban congregation of Greek culture, uses the Hellenistic metaphor of the body to explain the identity of the community. In Paul’s reception, in Col 3, 9-12 the new identity “put on” by the believer is manifested on a significant ethical level which is easily recognizable by the society of that time. This relativization of membership opens to an ecclesiology where everyone is accepted with his/her different conditions. Besides, positively, in the edification of the congregation, universality and unity go, at the same rate, together with the multiplicity of spiritual gifts and ministerial functions, in their diversity (1Cor 12).

Letizia Tomassone, Dialogo interreligioso e femminismi

Letizia Tomassone, Interreligious Dialogue and Feminisms

Several works of female theologians, involved in interreligious and intercul- tural dialogue, are reviewed in this article, in a field which is officially still dominated by males. Orientalism has influenced the imagination as regards women and has fomented islamophobia and xenophobia. Some criteria for a critical dialogue between women are suggested in this article, in the awareness that bitter conflicts on belonging exist; these conflicts authorize subordinate women to talk. The article illustrates the theologies of indigenous, Asiatic, Afro-American, Latinas women, Womanism and Mujerismo. The interreligious dialogue is a good instrument in the process of forming a hybrid society.
